Surgical Treatment for IBD
When medicine no longer works well in treating Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, surgery may be necessary so patients can find relief from their IBD symptoms. Occasionally, patients with IBD require emergency surgery to treat a blockage or other complication. Also, your doctor may recommend surgery if you have inflammatory bowel disease and precancerous cells were discovered during your colonoscopy.
AdventHealth Digestive Institute's colon and rectal surgeons provide their patients with seamless, coordinated care. Dr. Gavin Sigle, our colon and rectal surgeon, is known for his minimally invasive surgery approaches, which give patients faster and easier recoveries than with open procedures. Whenever they are able, they offer patients minimally invasive surgery, which also helps patients leave the hospital sooner after their procedure.
Colorectal Surgery for IBD That Keeps Natural Function
When a portion of the intestines or rectum needs to be removed to treat IBD, our surgeons seek to preserve as much natural function as possible. Colorectal surgery often requires an ostomy. However, as much as they can, AdventHealth Digestive Institute's surgeons offer J-pouch surgery that only involves a temporary stoma, or hole in the abdomen that allows stool to exit. A second surgery reconnects the intestines internally. This means the patient will no longer need an external ostomy bag.
Should a patient require a procedure that removes part of the rectum, our surgeons take efforts to preserve the sphincter muscle at the anal opening. Both this sphincter-preserving surgery approach and J-pouch surgery allow patients to void more like they did before their surgery.
