SEBRING, Fla., — Nearly two dozen medical residents are joining AdventHealth Sebring’s exceptional team to take their next steps to become fully licensed, board-certified family physicians.
Match Day, which was Friday, March 21, is where residents across the country found out where they are going to continue the next chapter of their medical careers.
Before Match Day, these physicians apply and interview at residency programs in the specialty of their choice and rank their preferences. The residency programs also rank their preferences of these physicians. The rank lists are then matched through the National Residency Match Program, (NRMP).
AdventHealth Sebring is delighted to announce that it has filled all spots for both Internal Medicine and Family Medicine programs. For the first time, AdventHealth is welcoming 15 new internal medicine residents as part of the program’s expansion. Previously eight spots were open in that program. All eight spots in the Family Medicine program were also filled.
Graduate Medical Education is the phase following medical school that equips physicians in a specialty.
“We are thrilled to welcome our new talented and dedicated resident physician colleagues to our Heartland community and to the AdventHealth mission of extending the healing ministry of Christ,” said Dr. Thomas Shimshak, the Internal Medicine Residency Program Director at AdventHealth Sebring. “Our team is looking forward to guiding their journey through medical education as they work with all of us to deliver comprehensive, whole-person care to our community.”
The mission of AdventHealth Sebring Internal Medicine Residency program is to consistently deliver exceptional care and is committed to improving the health, prosperity and well-being of the communities it serves. The program aims to train well-rounded, self-reliant, internists to practice in both urban communities and rural settings. The program’s primary objective is to enhance the supply of community hospital-oriented internists devoted to serving the public in the region or similar areas of the nation.
“We are elated to have the amazing opportunity to help these incredible resident doctors achieve their goals,” said Dr. Pamela Knickerbocker, the Director for AdventHealth Sebring’s Family Medicine Residency Program. “It’s very impactful to have the residency here for family medicine, where these new doctors can immerse themselves in AdventHealth’s whole-person care model and learn how to better guide patients toward total wellness – mind, body, and spirit.”
The goal of AdventHealth Sebring’s Family Medicine Residency program is to train family physicians who will be able to provide continuous and comprehensive care across the lifespan to patients and families. The program aims to produce the finest family physicians to meet the personal and population health needs of the South Central Florida Region.
“We are so happy to welcome these extraordinarily talented physicians to our AdventHealth family,” AdventHealth Sebring President and CEO Jason Dunkel said. “We are grateful for the opportunity to help them with their journey to become the next generation of healers and we are very glad to have them here to help enhance care in our Heartland community.”
